BARNSLEY DRAWN AGAINST CHELSEA IN FA YOUTH CUP

Reds travel to the capital for third round tie

14 November 2020

Barnsley will face Chelsea away in the FA Youth Cup third round.

The young Reds, who have begun the Professional Development League in decent form, couldn’t have asked for a tougher assignment as they face the current runners-up and nine-time winners.

That haul includes five successive triumphs between 2014 and 2018, during which time they scored 27 goals in finals alone.

Last season, Barnsley exited this competition in the fourth round after a 2-1 defeat at Birmingham City having beaten Crewe Alexandra by the same score in the previous round.

These two sides have met in the past, with the Blues recording a 3-0 victory at Stamford Bridge in the fifth round back in 2013. Chelsea would go onto lose the two-legged final against Norwich City, with former Red Cameron McGeehan scoring from the spot in both games for the Canaries.

Prior to that encounter, Barnsley also travelled to west London in 2010 at the same stage, but were narrowly edged out 2-1.

This tie is set to be played at one of Chelsea’s academy venues before Saturday 12 December.
