NICKY EADEN REFLECTS ON CUP VICTORY

2 December 2023

Nicky Eaden gave his post-match thoughts after the Reds secured safe passage to the FA Youth Cup fourth round at Oakwell.

We broke the deadlock through Emmaisa Nzondo shortly after the restart, before being pegged back by a penalty for the visitors converted by Bailey Adamson.

The tie was sent into extra time with the scores level after 90 minutes and it was the Reds who found the elusive winner via Fábio Jaló with ten minutes remaining of the additional time.

Eaden was pleased his side found a way to get the job done, but felt the Reds could have demonstrated more of what they are capable of on Friday evening.

"Listen, I don't think we've had our strongest team out all season, but we seem to find a way - which we did last season as well," began our U18s boss. "Credit to the lads for, not hanging on in there, but kept plugging away."

The goals came from both forwards named on the starting teamsheet - Nzondo and Jaló - the pair continuing their impressive start to the campaign for the Reds.

Our opener came from relentless pressure from Nzondo which forced Isaac Allen to make a mistake, leaving a golden chance for the Reds striker to tap home from close range.

With the scores tied heading into the final minutes, a moment of magic was needed to swing the tie in a team's favour. Up stepped Jaló, who unleashed a powerful, low drive which with pinpoint accuracy bounced off of the inside of the post and nestled in the bottom corner to send the Reds into raptures. Eaden praised both goals and the difference in how they came about.

"I do love it when we score a goal that we create! We score that many from pressing, which is a good thing. Fair play, Emmaisa has got that to his game. He seems to sprint everywhere and he's got a fantastic work rate. He deserves it for that.

"That's what he (Jaló) is. He'll nick you a goal out of nothing. He was the one who looked a threat all night, he caused them problems in and around the box. He's got that quality and knack of scoring."
