JOHN McATEE WINS 23/24 GOAL OF THE SEASON AWARD

29 April 2024

His Boxing Day cracker was chosen by fans as our Goal of the Season.

John McAtee has won the 23/24 Goal of the Season award in association with NG Decor.

The Luton Town-loanee was the scorer of our best strike of the season, according to Reds supporters, as his goal at Vale Park on Boxing Day edged out Adam Phillips' thunderbolt against Derby County by just 13 votes, whilst McAtee's lob against Stevenage was 3rd in the running.

His second goal on that Boxing Day afternoon, McAtee picked up the ball a long way out from goal following a relentless press by Maël de Gevigney on halfway and then 'Macca' let fly. The ball sensationally sailed into the net over Connor Ripley. The Reds went on to edge the Valiants 3-2.

"It's probably one of the better goals I've scored in my career," opened the 24-year-old. "I was in good form in terms of scoring-wise and performances. I'd already had my first of the day. When the space opened up, I knew I had it in my locker. I just went for it, and thankfully it went in."
