Reds Land Matty James!

25 January 2017

Barnsley Football Club are delighted to announce the signing of midfielder Matty James on loan from Premier League Champions Leicester City.

James has today joined the Club on a loan deal running until the summer of 2017 and will link up with Paul Heckingbottom and the squad immediately.

A 25-year-old commanding midfielder, James rose through the ranks of Manchester United’s prestigious academy before signing for Leicester City in 2012, where his outstanding performances helped the Foxes secure promotion to the Premier League in 2014.

With a total of 87 appearances and four goals to his name during his time at Leicester, James has a wealth of Premier League experience and has built a solid reputation as a midfielder with an unparalleled work rate and energy.  The highly regarded midfielder has also been capped 34 times across the England Youth set-up, at U16, U17, U19 and U20 levels.

Despite being linked heavily with other Premier League and Championship clubs, James has today signed with the Reds and committed to helping Paul Heckingbottom’s side push forward for the remainder of the 2016/17 campaign.

On securing one of his key transfer window targets, Reds Head Coach Paul Heckingbottom commented, “Matty is a player that we have tracked for a while. He has shown a real passion and desire to be here and help the Club continue our rise up the league and that’s exactly what we need at Barnsley Football Club. He will fit straight into the mentality that we already have within the squad and adds much needed quality as well as versatility to our midfield areas. He brings Premier League experience along with a knowledge of how to get promoted in the Football League as well.

“We’ve brought in a player who is hugely experienced and talented, so I’m delighted that we’ve got the deal done. I know that there was other interest and we had to fight that off, but ultimately it was Matty’s decision and he picked to join us and this shows that we can attract players from the best league in the world. We’d also like to place on record our thanks to Leicester City for giving us and Matty this opportunity.”
