REDS DEFEATED IN LEAGUE CUP FINAL

19 May 2024

Barnsley FC Women were edged out this afternoon in their attempt to complete a league and cup double, losing 2-1 against Sunderland's U23s.

It wasn't to be for Jess Horsley's Reds side on Sunday in the North East, despite a very even contest against a young outfit who have gone unbeaten all season.

The Black Cats took an early lead when Niyah Dunbar finished with aplomb from close-range whilst the Reds had to deal with the loss of defender Beth Ayrton who limped off injured.

Strike partners Kirstie Nicholls and Jodie Gregory both had good chances as Barnsley responded well but couldn't quite find the target. The latter then stung the hands of Sunderland's goalkeeper with an effort from distance, but the leveller wasn't coming as we headed into the interval.

Our opponents started the second period strongly but Gregory again had the chance to square the game up when on the break she was denied one-on-one by the feet of the 'keeper.

The Sunderland stopper was at full stretch on 70 minutes to deny substitute Amy Dawson as we ramped up the pressure. And the same player was then frustrated as a strike rattled against the crossbar. Just a minute later, Sunderland doubled their lead.

It was a cracking strike from Niamh Boothroyd which looked to have ended our hopes of a comeback. However, with less than 10 minutes to play Dawson did get her goal, heading home a corner kick to make for a grandstand finish to this final.

But try as they might in the remaining moments, Barnsley couldn't quite force a clear-cut opportunity and the League Cup trophy was won by Sunderland in the North East.

But what a season it has been for Horsley and her young squad, lifting the league title that earned them another promotion and contesting this cup final today.
