REDS PROMOTED AS CHAMPIONS WITH WALLSEND VICTORY!

12 May 2024

Barnsley FC Women earned a second successive promotion this afternoon, smashing nearest rivals, Wallsend to lift the title with a game to spare!

A four-goal demolition away at Wallsend this afternoon saw Jess Horsley's Reds claim the league title and promotion to the fourth tier.

Taking on a side who could have - theoretically - still won the title themselves, on their own patch, it was an outstanding display from a Barnsley side who have simply blown away the opposition over the last few months.

This was the girls' ninth consecutive victory in all competitions. They still have the League Cup final to contest before the season is completed.

As afternoon's go, this was a perfect one. Just 20 minutes on the clock and Jodie Gregory smacked in her 17th goal of the season. It's been a breakout campaign for the 17-year-old who has led the line superbly all season.

It could have been two soon after but Betty Cheetham's powerful strike from 25 yards rattled the Wallsend crossbar and flew out to safety.

Into the second half and sub Kirstie Nicholls was denied brilliantly by Wallsend's 'keeper, but the Reds' lead was doubled regardless within a couple of minutes.

Again, Nicholls was thwarted one-on-one but there was Gregory to slot home the rebound and make it 18 for the season!

Another regular scorer, Maddie Foye grabbed Barnsley's third on 76 minutes and her 11th of the campaign as she raced away down the left before finishing low into the bottom corner from just inside the box.

We lost Player of the Season Ashleigh Ridsdel-Harrison to injury which saw Gregory pick up the gloves for the remainder of the game. It didn't stop the Reds.

Deep into stoppage time, another sub in Louisa Barraclough made a lung-busting run from deep to score a cracker to put the cherry on the icing on the cake!

Champions with one game to spare, this Wednesday on home soil against Wakefield.

Well done, Jess and the team!
