ROBBIE CUNDY DISCUSSES RECENT COMEBACK

23 March 2024

Having played for the majority of our U21s’ 3-1 victory over Coventry City on Tuesday afternoon, Robbie Cundy is nearing a long-awaited return to first team action.

The centre-back hasn’t featured for the Reds since April 2023 after encountering problems with his sacrum but has now put those difficulties behind him and is continuing his return to full fitness.

“I feel good; I enjoyed that one,” smiled Cundy, speaking to iFollow Barnsley after our U21s’ match on Oakwell. “It’s the longest I’ve played so far – I’ve done 45, 60 and now 80 I reckon, all in.

“It’s good to be back, I’m really enjoying it and hopefully I can take it that bit further and get some first team games.”

The road to recovery has been long for the 26-year-old, who has been out of action for almost a year.

It has been tough for the most part, but with the help of his family, friends, teammates and staff at Oakwell, he is eager to push on and return to the Reds’ matchday squad.

“When you’re fit, you don’t realise how good you’ve got it because injuries aren’t enjoyable at all, you know, watching every week from the stands isn’t good – you want to be down there helping the team,” admitted Cundy.

“But I got through it in the end – there’s light at the end of the tunnel now, so I’ll keep pushing and see what happens.

“I’ve played three under 21s games now. There’s not many games left of the season, but I’m hoping I can get my opportunity because the gaffer hasn’t even seen me.

“But I’m back now and it’s in the manager’s hands now, but I’m hoping he can see what I can bring to the team and I can get a few games.”

With Barnsley currently sitting fifth in Sky Bet League One, the race for promotion is well and truly on as we embark on the final eight games of the campaign.

Cundy is hoping to play some part in helping the Reds secure a return to the Championship, whether automatically or via the play-offs.

“That’s the main thing really for us, the promotion push,” he insisted. “We’re in a good position at the moment and I’m looking forward to just getting back in the matchday squad and getting the excitement for the games coming up.

“So, I’m really excited and hopefully I can do that.”
