NEILL COLLINS ON NEW YEAR'S DAY POINT

2 January 2024

Our Head Coach provided his take on our 1-1 draw with Wigan Athletic at Oakwell on Monday afternoon.

After dominating possession in the opening half, the Reds took the lead on the stroke of half-time through Devante Cole's 14th of the campaign.

However, the Latics found a response in the second half after Jonny Smith's stunning strike from range in the 87th minute ensured the spoils were shared in the 2024 curtain raiser.

Collins felt his side began to feel the effects of a taxing fortnight in the final stages of the game, but praised his players for their application after making it six unbeaten in Sky Bet League One.

"First half, lots of positives. Two or three sloppy parts of play that gave counter-attacks to Wigan, but we had our own chances in the first-half and I thought just from the 30th minute we looked like we were going to take the lead and we did.

"But then in the second half, we probably ran out of steam. Wigan pushed us hard, but it took a worldie goal to break our lead and then we were hanging on slightly in the end. We'd have liked to have had more control in the second half, but it's hard to be critical of the players. They've given so much over the past four games."
