REDS STORM TO VICTORY IN LEAGUE CUP CLASH!

25 February 2024

Barnsley move on in this season's League Cup after thrashing Hull United in this afternoon's tie away from home.

The opportunity for success continues for Barnsley FCW following today's outstanding victory.

Taking on a Hull United side for the third time this season, it makes it two wins from three against those opponents and sees Jess Horsley's Reds move into the next round.

The match was played in York after the hosts' playing surface was deemed unplayable.

It was a strong start from the Reds, dominating the middle of the pitch and creating many opportunities. This created an early chance for Macy Lunn to slide the ball into the right side channel for Kirstie Nicholls to run onto and hit a cross come shot that nestled into the top left corner.

Building on the early pressure and constantly winning the ball back high up the pitch led to Jodie Gregory sliding a ball into Betty Cheetham where she calmly slotted the ball into the back of the net.

After winning the ball back in the opposition half, the skipper, Charley Evans smashed a thunder bolt of a strike from 30 yards out, beating the keeper for pace and power.

Just before half time, good play by the Reds led to an opportunity for Cheetham to return the favour and play the ball for Gregory to score.

A dominant display from the Reds, leading 4-0 at half time.

Hull started the second half with more energy, causing a few problems, but these were well dealt with by the defence.

Good build up play by the Reds allowed Eden Schofield time in the middle of the park, where she picked out a ball over the Hull defence to Nicholls. She went one-on-one with the 'keeper and calmly placed the ball in the back of the net.

After a few blocked shots the ball fell to Lunn where she took a shot from 20 yards out. The ball flew past the 'keeper into the bottom left hand corner.

The Reds saw out the rest of game in comfortable fashion, not allowing Hull to create any chances.
