SATURDAY WILL SEE WESTON PARK CANCER CHARITY TAKE OVER OAKWELL

20 February 2024

Weston Park Cancer Charity take over Oakwell Stadium this Saturday as the Reds take on Derby County, marking the first event in the 2024 calendar of the ‘Together At Every Step’ partnership.

The aim of the partnership, with Barnsley, Sheffield Wednesday and Sheffield United, is for the clubs to come together in raising awareness and supporting the fundraising efforts for the charity. The charity are well on the way to reaching their fundraising target of £50,000 for the partnership campaign and every penny makes a difference.

Weston Park Cancer Charity is here to face cancer with you. Their services and support are available for those affected by cancer, helping everyone to live with and beyond cancer. The funds the charity raise also support vital, pioneering research and clinical trials led by the exceptional medical experts at Weston Park Cancer Centre.

One of the charity’s latest projects, the Big Purple Bus initiative, which has just celebrated four months on the road, is making its Barnsley debut at Oakwell on Saturday. The Big Purple Bus brings Healthcare Professionals and qualified Welfare Advisors directly into communities, ensuring people across our region have equal access to cancer support services. So, if you spot the Big Purple Bus at Oakwell on Saturday, please feel free to pop on-board and have a chat with the friendly team.

Emma Clarke, CEO of Weston Park Cancer Charity, said: “We are so proud of our Big Purple Bus project, and to see the huge impact the buses are already having withing the community is truly outstanding. It is fantastic that in just four months we have already spoken to hundreds of people from across South Yorkshire about the cancer support that they or their loved ones can access.

Along with the Big Purple Bus, there will also be one of the charity’s minibuses at Oakwell. Weston Park Cancer Charity provide a free transport service for local residents having cancer treatment. The free service is available in Barnsley, Chesterfield, Rotherham and Meadowhall. Oakwell Stadium is a stop on the Barnsley route, where patients are picked up and dropped off at Oakwell, with free parking for patients’ cars available at the stadium. We are keen to spread the message of the transport service to ensure travel concerns do not prevent patients from accessing treatment.

Darren Hayes, Head of Fundraising at Weston Park Cancer Charity, said: “We’re delighted to continue our Together At Every Step campaign with Barnsley FC, partnerships like this make such a difference to local people and our communities.

"We’re looking forward to our takeover day and we are pleased to be bringing our Big Purple Bus to Oakwell which will be on hand to welcome fans onboard to learn about the cancer support we offer within the region.”

Jon Flatman, Interim CEO at Barnsley FC added: "Our relationship with Weston Park Cancer Charity goes from strength to strength each season. This Saturday will be another special matchday where the charity's message is heard loud and clear. Please everybody support where possible and help the charity in their need for donations."

Please support the charity in whatever way you can. The team of volunteers will be around the stadium bucket collecting, so cash, change and contactless payments are much appreciated towards the charity's £50,000 target. You can also donate online at together-at-every-step-partnership.raisely.com.
