REDS MAINTAIN TITLE HOPES WITH ALNWICK SUCCESS

29 April 2024

Barnsley FC Women registered a 7th consecutive victory in all competitions when taking all three points at Alnwick on Sunday afternoon.

In what was their third fixture in seven days and with a depleted squad owing to injuries in the camp, Jess Horsley's Reds side still saw off a spirited Alnwick outfit yesterday.

The opening stages were cagey with Barnsley looking to find weaknesses in the hosts' backline who were attempting to play out from the back in the first 10 minutes or so.

But on 13 minutes, Alayna Millard forced the home team's 'keeper into a fine diving save following Victoria Chincharo's inch-perfect cross into the box.

Less than 10 minutes later, Chincharo did the business herself. Found some 30 yards from goal by striker Eliza Holland, the Reds midfielder curled home a wonder strike to put Barnsley ahead.

That combination of Chincharo and Millard looked threatening once more as we edged towards the break, with Alayna again denied by Alnwick's goalkeeper, this time 20 yards out.

As we looked to the referee to blow for half-time, a scramble inside the Reds box saw the ball squirm into the path of an Alnwick player who turned it home from close-range.

HALF-TIME: Alnwick 1-1 Barnsley

Strikers Jodie Gregory and Kirstie Nicholls appeared as substitutes during the interval and both would go on to add to their outstanding numbers in front of goal.

But Nicholls was first denied by the Alnwick stopper on 50 minutes when one-on-one and looking certain to put the Reds back in front in Northumberland.

However, that second goal did arrive three minutes later as skipper, Charley Evans sent Kirstie through on goal with a delightful pass and the forward stroked home from just inside the box.

2-1 became 3-1 with 20 minutes remaining as Gregory ran free of the defenders to finish low and true beyond the 'keeper and seal another big victory.

The result sees Barnsley 2nd in the table on goal difference, but with games in-hand over leaders, Spennymoor and three fixtures still to play.

FULL-TIME: Alnwick 1-3 Barnsley

Ridsdel-Harrison, Evans, Wilson, Ayrton, Turton-Burrell, Millard, Brown, Chincharo, Cheetham, Dawson, Holland.
