Barnsley U21s endured a difficult trip to Humberside, as they fell to a 3-1 defeat against Hull City at North Ferriby, in spite of a spirited display.
It was Barnsley who had the first chance of the encounter, when Josiah Dyer hit a shot which clattered a Tigers defender, and bounced into the feet of Charlie Winfield, whose fired an effort wide of the far post.
However, the hosts were ahead moments later when Jaedyn Chibanga’s cross was inadvertently diverted into his own net by the unfortunate Alex Joof with just eight minutes on the clock.
We sought to rally back following Hull’s opener, and they had a number of opportunities to do so, courtesy of some excellent set piece play from Charlie Winfield, but no one in Red was able to capitalise on his wicked deliveries.
Barnsley continued to create chances here and there, with Dyer seeing an attempt blocked, while Danny Benson and Jack Shepherd both came close to making the breakthrough as the first half drew to a close.

Following the break, there were yet more blues the Reds as Hull doubled their lead when Henry Sandat headed home Oliver Green’s corner seven minutes after the restart.
We halved the deficit shortly after, though, when Trialist A stepped up to convert a penalty having been felled in the box to put Barnsley right back in the contest.
However, that joy was short lived as City re-established their two-goal cushion in the blink of an eye through Joseph Johnson, who casually slotted past Kieren Flavell.
Trialist A came close to netting his second of the encounter after being cleverly picked out by Theo Chapman, and Mylan Benjamin’s tried to set up a tense finale with a speculative strike late on, but the Reds were unable to find a way back into the game and left Humberside empty handed.
