REDS GRAB LATE WIN AGAINST WYCOMBE

28 November 2023

Late drama this evening as we returned to winning ways under the Oakwell lights.

A stoppage time Sam Cosgrove strike - his first goal for the club - was enough for a big three points on Tuesday night.

It was the visitors from Buckinghamshire – decked in green and white stripes – who had the evening’s first real chance as ex-Red Josh Scowen smashed an effort on target only to see it blocked by Jordan Williams, before Harry Boyes tried with a rebound, but again, Williams slid in to prevent the goalbound shot.

Nicky Cadden then tricked his way beyond the full back on the left flank before firing into the side-netting, whilst John McAtee fired over soon after, as the Reds began to take control.

However, despite again dominating the ball, Barnsley were struggling to create openings with a number of examples of sloppy play putting a premature end to a handful of promising attacking moves.

HALF TIME: Barnsley 0-0 Wycombe Wanderers

The away side had Scowen to thank early in the second half as he thwarted Callum Styles at the back post, as the Hungarian looked to get onto the end of Devante Cole's flick-on.

Barnsley were well on top by now, with Cadden proving dangerous down the left, as Chairboys defenders were forced to clear crosses behind on numerous occasions. On two occasions, Cosgrove - on as a sub in the 61st minute - was ever-so-close to reaching the ball, inches from goal as the pressure continued.

As we approached the final stages, Williams saw a header saved - just - on his line by Max Stryjek, before the 'keeper watched on helplessly as Maël de Gevigney's header came back off the crossbar.

With the night looking likely to end in frustration for Neill Collins' side, a bizarre moment arrived in the 93rd minute that ultimately won Barnsley the game.

A drop-ball inside his own six-yard box saw Stryjek pick up the ball, and Cosgrove gave him a nudge. The goalkeeper dropped to the floor, but referee, Darren Drysdale saw no infringement and as the ball spilled loose, it allowed the Reds' number 9 to simply tap home into an empty net.

Boyes - for the away side - was sent off for his protests, and whilst Wycombe did force a couple of late corners, Barnsley hung on to claim a vital win here at Oakwell.
