REDS EARN POINT ON OAKWELL

5 November 2023

Barnsley FC Women drew 1-1 with Spennymoor Town Ladies at Oakwell in an even affair on Sunday afternoon.

A first half finish by Kirstie Nicholls was cancelled out just before the break by Alex Saunders for the visitors to ensure the spoils were shared in the league clash.

It was the Reds who started brightest in the affair, looking to assert their authority by pressing the Moors high up the pitch, and Jess Horsley's side were creating chances by stealing possession.

Jodie Gregory led the line well for Barnsley and had an effort saved by Spennymoor 'keeper Miller which look destined for the bottom corner a third of the way through the opening half.

The early pressure finally paid after 25 minutes, with the Reds breaking the deadlock. Nicholls received the ball in the area and arrowed a clinical finish into the bottom corner but for a hand from Miller which couldn't prevent the ball nestling in front of the Barry Murphy Stand.

Looking for a way back into the game, Spennymoor then threatened on goal, an effort from range causing problems for Ashley Ridsdel-Harrison but she got down well to her left-hand side.

Gregory had a good chance to double our advantage not long after, receiving the ball in the box from a Kim Brown diagonal pass, but the striker just couldn't quite create the angle required with her boot to convert in the 38th minute.

Seconds from taking a lead into the break, Spennymoor equalised in added time. Saunders picked up a rebounded bouncing ball on the edge of the area, got her knee over it and arrowed a pinpoint half-volley in off the post leaving Ridsdale-Harrison with no chance.

HALF TIME: Reds 1-1 Spennymoor Town Ladies

The first period after the restart lacked fluidity at Oakwell, with a number of stoppages for injuries and subsequent changes which disrupted the pattern of the encounter established during the first half.

Spennymoor began to creep into the game, and almost found themselves with the lead just after the hour mark yet for some heroic defending by Stephanie Rigby. Her pace allowed her to catch up the Moors attacker who look destined for a one-on-one attempt at goal, but the Reds defender produced an inch-perfect challenge from the side to put the ball out for a corner.

It was Victoria Chincharo's turn to be the hero, flicking off the line following a dangerous in-swinging corner delivery from the right in the 66th minute.

The game continued to lack the action the Oakwell faithful were treated to prior to the break, with both sides making a number of changes to try and find an elusive winner under the lights.

Spennymoor almost grabbed one in the dying moments, much like in the first half, but Rigby once again managed to wrap her boot around the ball as the visiting attaker approached the goal with intent, resulting in a corner which was dealt with by the Reds and secured a good point against the Moors.
