MICHAEL DUFF REACTS TO WEMBLEY DEFEAT

30 May 2023

Our Head Coach gave his reaction to our late defeat at Wembley in the Sky Bet League One Play-Off Final on Monday afternoon.

In a game that saw the Reds go down to ten men on 49 minutes, Duff's men produced an inspired performance to keep the Owls at bay for over an hour in front of the 75,000-strong crowd in the capital.

In the added time of the second period of extra time, Josh Windass snatched a late winner for Wednesday, leaving the Reds players despondent, with just seconds to go until an ensuing penalty shootout.

The gaffer praised the players for their application in extreme adversity, but also stressed the importance of the response his side must show to the disappointment of losing out in the final.

"Immense pride in the performance. Immense pride in the determination and courage," he praised. "Credit to Sheffield Wednesday. They made it hard for us. But we felt in the second half with eleven men we could have gotten a better foothold in the game and started using the ball.

"Weirdly, it's actually more cruel than getting beaten on penalties. To have gone into the 123rd minute of the 49th game of the season is brutal. Dust yourselves down and go again."
