LUCA CONNELL NAMED YOUNG PLAYER OF THE SEASON

7 May 2023

Luca Connell is the Reds' Young Player of the Season for the 22/23 campaign.

Linking up with the Reds in the summer transfer window, the Republic of Ireland youth international has impressed with a number of dominant midfield displays in his first season at Oakwell.

Making 44 appearances in all competitions under Michael Duff, Connell has contributed with two goals and nine assists this campaign - both goals coming on the road in Sky Bet League One.

The first came in our 2-1 away win over Peterborough United, with the ball bouncing to the 22-year-old outside the area. He had time to chest it and half-volley into the bottom corner, leaving Posh 'keeper Lucas Bergstrom rooted to the spot.

Most recently, Connell scored a quickfire opener at Port Vale, the Reds running out 3-1 winners at Vale Park on a cold, February evening. In almost identical fashion to his account opener for the club, he chested just outside the area and arrowed a half-volley into the corner to give his side the lead inside the opening minute.

On winning the award, the midfielder spoke of his gratitude to his colleagues and the Reds supporters:

"It's a real honour to receive this award,"  began Connell. "I've loved every minute of my time here since coming through the door in the summer. I've really enjoyed playing my football with the lads and under the guidance and help I've received from the coaching staff.

"We've got three, potentially four huge games coming up, and we just need to approach them with the same mentality as we have done all season. Thank you to the fans for their incredible support."
