JOSH BENSON SCOOPS GOAL OF SEASON AWARD

7 May 2023

Josh Benson's long-range strike against Charlton Athletic has been voted as the best of the 22/23 campaign.

Chosen by Reds supporters, Benson's strike against the Addicks wins the accolade for the season.

In the tenth minute of the game, the 23-year-old picked up the ball 35 yards out from goal and unleashed a powerful strike that nestled into the top corner of Craig MacGillivray's net to open the scoring at Oakwell. The Reds overcame Charlton in a 3-1 victory on a sunny September afternoon.

The strike received recognition at the time, winning Sky Bet's League One September Goal of the Month award.

The midfielder revealed he was unsure of the distance from goal when taking aim, but believes in his ability from that range when discussing the award.

"I didn't realise how far out I was at the time," admitted Benson. "I back myself from those sort of distances and thankfully it went in. Most importantly, it helped us on the way to a big three points.

"A big thank you to the fans who voted, as well as my teammates and the coaching staff for all their support across the season."
