Our U21s secured bragging rights in the South Yorkshire derby with a 1-0 victory over Sheffield Wednesday on Tuesday afternoon.
Josiah Dyer’s second half goal was enough to claim three points for the young Reds, who made it back-to-back wins in the Professional Development League.
Barnsley began the game positively and almost opened the scoring when Aiden Marsh's fine free-kick cannoned back off the upright.
As the half wore on, the Reds continued to search for a way through and came close as our Trialist defender climbed highest to meet a corner, only to be denied by a flying save from Jack Hall.
Following some fantastic build up play, Keegan Hartley was next to try his luck, but his fine effort whistled narrowly wide of the post.
Another Trialist, competing at left-back, had a decent opportunity shortly before the break after linking up well with Jack Butterfill and bursting into the box but dragging just wide as our U21s ended the half brightly.
HALF-TIME: Sheffield Wednesday 0-0 Barnsley
Wednesday looked to come into the second half in a more positive light than they left the first. A fast break up the pitch from the hosts led to their attacker being clean through on goal, however, brave goalkeeping from Adam Hayton assured that the score stayed level.
Our U21s found the goal they were searching for just before the hour mark when Dyer – freshly introduced from the bench – made an instant impact by tapping home Danny Benson’s superb cross at the back post.
From the restart, Barnsley almost found their second as Butterfill won possession back and drove forward, but his attempt was gathered comfortably by Hall.
In search of an equaliser, Wednesday began to bombard the Reds’ area with a series of crosses that Benson and Will Lancaster, in particular, defended terrifically to maintain our slender advantage.
As time ticked away, our U21s almost added the cherry on the icing as Jordan Helliwell broke at pace but crashed his powerful strike into the side netting.
It was a fine display from the young Reds, who condemned Wednesday to a fourth consecutive defeat, leaving them rooted to the foot of the table.
