REDS HELD IN BRISTOL

4 March 2023

Barnsley had to settle for a point against Bristol Rovers this afternoon.

Despite having the better of the opportunities in this one, Michael Duff's side were unable to find a winner in Sky Bet League One.

There was very little to enjoy about the opening 45 minutes. Not much football played on what appeared to be a very difficult surface at the Memorial Stadium. The nature of the first half wasn't helped by some strange refereeing decisions, with two home players and both Mads Andersen and Jon Russell booked rather harshly.

Other than a wayward Liam Kitching header from a Nicky Cadden free-kick, the Reds struggled to create anything of note until late in the half.

The hosts weren't exactly threatening either. Their best effort falling to Scott Sinclair who'd found space on the counter before blazing his eventual shot high and wide from the right of the box.

Towards added time, Barnsley upped the ante somewhat and Herbie Kane ought to have done better when James Norwood teed up the midfielder after a great ball by Bobby Thomas. But from 14 yards out, Kane was closed down by James Belshaw in the Gas goal who blocked the shot with his legs.

The goalkeeper had to be at his very best soon after to tip a Kitching header up and over the bar following a dangerous Cadden corner.

HALF-TIME: Bristol Rovers 0-0 Barnsley

Rovers began the second half in the ascendancy and Harry Isted had to be sharp to parry away a close-range header.

Devante Cole looked certain to put the Reds in front on the hour-mark, four yards from goal but he looked to have been pulled back by Gibson, allowing Rovers to clear. Despite protests from all in black, the referee waved away the penalty claims.

With 15 minutes remaining, Sam Finley headed substitute Slobodan Tedic's cross against his own crossbar, with Duff's men now laying seige to the Gas goal.

In the dying stages, Adam Phillips fired straight at Belshaw after a lovely knock down from Tedic and soon after, Kitching drove a shot from range a foot wide of goal.

The winning sequence comes to an end then, but the unbeaten run remains.

FULL-TIME: Bristol Rovers 0-0 Barnsley
