Speaking after our U18s’ impressive 4-1 victory against Coventry City on Tuesday evening, two goal hero Josiah Dyer expressed his delight at the young Reds’ late resurgence.

Following the Sky Blues’ equaliser 15 minutes from time, Dyer notched his second of the encounter before strikes from Alex Joof and Hayden Pickard sealed three more valuable points.

“It’s a good result in the end,” began Dyer. “When you’re winning 4-1 you usually can’t really complain, but our performance throughout the whole game could have been better.

“We start games slowly a lot of the time, but we can’t afford to do that against every team because some will look to punish us. Once we got in our groove and got our confidence up, it helped everyone out and secured the result for us.

“I think we know as a team that we can get goals. We have a mindset as young players who love football that we can go again and again and attack, because we know we’ve got the ability to.

“Like I said though it’s all about our performance. If we play well defensively and offensively and sustain it throughout the game, then we’ll get the results. We react with goals and going forward, and that’s the way we love to play.”

Dyer’s brace took him to nine for the season, with only Theo Chapman and Rafael Monteiro netting more at U18s level.

The young forward was delighted to contribute so effectively against Coventry and was naturally disappointed not to complete his hat-trick.

“I’m buzzing to score two,” he continued. “That’s what I love to do, score goals. Both of them were in the box today and that’s what I need to keep doing – find good positions in the area and make sure the ball ends up in the back of the net.

“I’m gutted to not get a hat-trick, there was one chance where Josh whipped a ball in and any significant touch would have sent it in, again in the six yard box. It’s disappointing when you just miss out on those but I’m going to keep going and I know I’ve got the ability to get a hat-trick soon.

“We want to win games and score goals, which is why we’re on such an unbeaten streak. Not one player in the changing room thinks we can lose, and that really helps. When you’ve got belief in every single position, that massively helps, and we’re going to keep going and winning as many games as we can.

“We’re looking forward to the next game; Wigan is always tough – especially at their place. We need to go in with same mindset. We’ll work hard in training and have some rest and recovery, but like I said we all believe that we’re going to do well, we’re going to win the league and we’re going to break records.”
