The defender spoke to iFollow Barnsley after becoming the Reds' sixth addition of the summer transfer window.
Penning a four-year deal at Oakwell, the 25-year-old arrives from recently relegated Forest Green Rovers following a season in Sky Bet League One at the New Lawn.
"I'm delighted," beamed the Birmingham-born man. "I've known about this for a couple of weeks now and as soon as I heard about it I wanted to get it done.
"The last couple of seasons they've [Barnsley] done well and challenging. I think the challenge for me is to go the next step now and I want to be part of something big."
Starting out at his hometown club of Birmingham City, O'Keeffe has gone on to make over 150 appearances in English football since leaving St Andrew's.
During that time the Irish youth international has been utilised across the defence and further forward as part of a midfield. However, it is in the backline where our new recruit feels most at home.
"I like to be on the front foot," he explained. "Attacking and defending. I like to go forward and create stuff, going inside the pitch and outside the pitch. Assists and goals and winning games.
"Wherever the gaffer wants me to play, I'll play. I've played down the left-hand side and right-hand side at wing-back and I feel like that's where I'm most comfortable."
