CHARLIE HICKINGBOTTOM REFLECTS ON BLUES DRAW

28 January 2023

Following our U18s’ 2-2 draw with Birmingham City, Charlie Hickingbottom expressed his delight after his side’s unbeaten run was extended by another game.

The young Reds trailed twice on Friday evening but showed excellent character to fight back and claim a share of the spoils.

“There are a lot of positives we can take from it,” he affirmed. “It felt brilliant to come from behind twice, it shows who we are as a team.

“Now we’re top of the league, everyone wants to come here and beat us so I’m pleased that we didn’t allow that to happen.”

Hickingbottom believes Barnsley dominated the game and deserved more than the point they were forced to settle with.

The Reds side fell victim to a cruelly disallowed goal late on in the contest, with Leo Farrell seeing his effort ruled out for offside.

“We were at it for the full 90 minutes and didn’t give up,” continued the youngster. “It was just one of those days. We didn’t lose, but obviously it was still gutting to have the winner ruled out at the end.

“We were all over them for most of the game. We just needed that final edge and that extra bit of quality to get us over the line with a win.”

In terms of improvements, Hickingbottom hopes he and his teammates are able to sharpen up in training before the next game in order to get back to winning ways.

Nicky Eaden’s side travel to Coventry City on Tuesday, looking to extend their unbeaten run in the Professional Development League to five games.

“We need to tidy up at the back,” he insisted. “The two goals we conceded were preventable and we need to be taking our chances when they come to us, but overall, I’ll take a point from the game.”
