GET TO KNOW: BOBBY THOMAS

14 January 2023

The 21-year-old recently joined the Reds on loan until the end of the season from Burnley FC.

Linking back up with his former U21s boss Michael Duff, Thomas arrives at Oakwell after spending the first half of the season at Bristol Rovers.

Reds fans can learn a little bit more about our latest recruit as we delve into the career of Bobby Thomas so far.

Bobby Thomas was born in Chester on 30 January 2001. His footballing career started out on Merseyside, joining Everton as a schoolboy.

Crewe Alexandra was his next destination, but a case of Osgood-Schlatter's syndrome whilst with the Railwaymen limited the amount of games Thomas was able to play during his formative years as a footballer.

After leaving Crewe, Thomas impressed the hierachy at Burnley and signed a two-year scholarship with the Clarets in 2017 as a 16-year-old.

A one-month loan to Kendal Town exposed the centre-half to senior football, engaging in physical battles with strikers much older than the youngster. A year later, the 6' 4" defender was named the Clarets' Young Player of the Year.

Impressing in pre-season and with injuries in the camp ahead of the 20/21 season, Thomas made his debut for Burnley in a 2-0 Carabao Cup win over Millwall - keeping a clean sheet and ensuring safe passage into the fourth round of the competition for the Clarets.

In the January of that campaign, Thomas joined Sky Bet League Two outfit Barrow for the remainder of the season. The Bluebirds were involved in a fight to retain their divisional status for another season, with our latest recruit playing an integral part in helping the Cumbrian-based side staying up. Thomas scored an important goal in that run, firing into the roof of the net from close range away to Forest Green Rovers in April 2021 - his first EFL goal.

The defender returned to Turf Moor in the following season, going on to captain the U23s side and making the substitutes bench on numerous occasions under Sean Dyche in the Premier League.

Looking to gain more first-team experience, Bobby joined fellow Sky Bet League One outfit Bristol Rovers in September 2022. He made an instant impact, scoring on his debut to equalise in a 2-2 draw against Morecambe.

Thomas became a key figure in Joey Barton's backline, helping the Gas to 8th in the division and making 26 appearances in all competitions.

Recalled by the Clarets this month, he now joins the Reds for the rest of the 22/23 campaign.
