MICHAEL DUFF REACTS TO DEFEAT AGAINST BOLTON

2 January 2023

Our Head Coach gave his thoughts to iFollow Barnsley following our 3-0 defeat to Bolton Wanderers at Oakwell in Sky Bet League One.

In the 11th minute, Mads Andersen brought down Dion Charles in the area and conceded a penalty, receiving a red card in the process. Charles converted the penalty, followed by a goal for Jon Dadi Bodvarsson just before the break.

Kyle Dempsey scored a third just before the end to consign the Reds to their first defeat in almost two months in Sky Bet League One.

The gaffer felt his side began the affair poorly but showed an encouraging reaction in the face of the early setback.

"I don't think we started particularly well," admitted Duff. "Too many stray passes, too many poor decisions. To play 80 minutes against any team is tough enough. To play against a good team is very tough. The reaction I thought was very good. That's the frustration, we gift them a goal, it's a calamity moment.

"Our reaction was very good. I thought we came out second half on the front foot. In the end their legs and quality overrun it."

Despite the scoreline on paper being a disappointing one, the gaffer was pleased with the mentality his side showed in difficult circumstances.

Monday's loss came after a seven-game unbeaten run for the Reds in the league, with Duff emphasising the need for context when reflecting on this result.

"They stuck together," he affirmed. "There was no finger pointing, trying to portion blame at anyone else. The lads that came on had a go. That's all you can ask.

"The reality is, we were unbeaten in almost two months. We've been beaten, we'll lick our wounds and we'll try and react properly."
