Following our U18s’ 4-1 win over Peterborough United, Alex Anaman expressed his delight at scoring a hat-trick to begin the New Year in style.
The young forward took his tally to seven for the season across both academy age groups – a fair return given he’s played much of the campaign in a wing-back role.
“It’s a great feeling as it was a brilliant win for the team,” beamed Anaman. “The boys played well and we did exactly what we set out to do which was to win the game, something we did quite comfortably in the end.”
It was a game that had the potential to frustrate our young Reds who, despite their dominance, fell behind shortly before the break against the run of play.
However, our U18s’ character and goal scoring prowess can never be underestimated, with this particular crop of players keen to attack and create opportunities at will.
“It was a difficult and scrappy game at times but I’m just glad I took the chances that came to me,” reflected Anaman. “I’m buzzing to have made such a positive impact.
“At half-time, we spoke about how we needed to be more clinical and have more intensity. I think we outplayed them in the first half, but we just weren’t taking the chances.
“We were a bit slow in both our thoughts and our movement at times but in the second half, we were much more clinical, and it showed with the scoreline.”
