RUSSELL AND THOMAS ON TARGET IN U21S VICTORY

7 February 2023

Our U21s made it back-to-back wins in the Professional Development League with a 2-1 victory over Hull City on Tuesday afternoon.

Goals in either half from Jon Russell and Luke Thomas secured all three points for the young Reds, who had to weather a late storm when Will Jarvis halved the deficit.

The visitors saw an early strike ruled out when skipper Tom Nixon was adjudged to have been in an offside position after Adama Traoré’s free-kick bounced back off the upright.

Slobodan Tedić – playing his first minutes since November – was a constant thorn in the Tigers’ side and tested David Robson from range with a deft lob, that was comfortably gathered by the opposition goalkeeper.

Shortly before the half hour mark, our high press caused mayhem as Tedić intercepted a loose pass and found Russell who had the easy task of curling high into the middle of the net to give our U21s the lead.

HALF-TIME: Barnsley 1-0 Hull City

Early in the second half, Hull saw another goal chalked off as Louie Chorlton was denied by the linesman’s flag after finishing neatly into the bottom corner.

Five minutes later, we doubled our advantage when Charlie Winfield – captaining the side for the afternoon – surged down the left flank and whipped a fine ball towards the penalty spot that Fabio Jalo left for Thomas to control and finish hard and low.

That proved to be his last involvement – along with Tedić, Russell and Jordan Helliwell – who all departed the pitch after gaining valuable match fitness.

Midway through the half, Hull pulled one back as Jarvis fired a half-volley beyond Rogan Ravenhill to set up a nervy finale at the Oakwell Training Ground.

The visitors piled on pressure in the closing stages, and it looked as if they would get their rewards in stoppage time as Alfie Taylor took aim from close range, only to be denied by a stunning save down to his left by Ravenhill.

It was enough to claim a priceless victory for the young Reds, who travel up to Hull for the reverse fixture next week.
