MICHAEL DUFF REACTS TO VICTORY OVER OXFORD UNITED

2 February 2023

The gaffer gave his reaction to our 2-1 win over the U’s on Wednesday evening in Sky Bet League One.

Bobby Thomas opened his account for the Reds with a headed effort on the half-hour mark from a delicious cross into the box by Adam Phillips.

Also scoring his first goal for the Reds, Nicky Cadden doubled our lead on 58 minutes after finishing a fluid counter-attack. The hosts pegged one back 20 minutes from the end via an Elliott Moore header, however, the Reds did enough to come away with all three points.

Duff was pleased with how well his side displayed both sides of the game on Wednesday night - showing moments of quality whilst grinding out the win late on.

"Any away game is tough to win but I thought we were good value," began the 45-year-old. "I thought we showed all sides of the game today, moments of quality. We probably should have shown a little bit more - but then the doggedness at the end. Oxford have resorted to going long, direct, long throws because of our shape and discipline - they couldn't play through us, so, there's a compliment in there somewhere.

"We've had to hang on," continued our Head Coach. "I don't remember Brad making any save of note. Lots of pressure, the ball bouncing around in the penalty area. But, kept them at arm's length fairly comfortably. We knew the second goal was going to be extremely important at half time. We knew they were gonna come out and have a go. We've had to dig in, but the spirit of the lads showed, togetherness."
