The spoils were shared as our U21s drew 1-1 with Coventry City at the Oakwell Training Ground on Tuesday afternoon.

Our young side recovered from an early setback to claim a hard-fought point and can perhaps count themselves unfortunate not to have taken all three from a contest where they enjoyed the better chances.

The Reds began the encounter rapidly as they stormed up the pitch straight from kick-off, with Oli Shaw taking aim inside the opening seconds and rattling the crossbar.

Despite the Reds’ quick start, it was City who broke the deadlock when a quick break up the field saw Isaac Moore burst into the box, before going down under a heavy challenge. Tom Costello calmy converted the resulting penalty, sending Adam Hayton the wrong way.

Our U21s didn’t let Coventry’s opener deter them, and they continued to attack the visitors’ goal. Two quickfire efforts from Shaw and Josh Martin went narrowly wide before Harrison Nejman was picked out with space and time in the box, but Cian Tyler was equal to his curling strike.

The young Reds dominated proceedings as they sent a barrage of attacks at the City defence. Danny Benson, Rudi Pache and Shaw all came close to levelling following a goalmouth scramble, before Tyler was on hand to thwart our Scottish striker moments later with a fine save.

Eventually, Barnsley got the breakthrough that their spirited play deserved when a corner whipped into the box was bundled into the back of his own net by the unfortunate Callum Perry 10 minutes before the interval.

HALF-TIME: Barnsley 1-1 Coventry City

Contrary to the first half, the second 45 devolved into a midfield battle and scrappy play, with both teams struggling to hold the ball and make the most of their possession. The Reds were first to muster an attack as Jordan Helliwell was thwarted by the ever-impressive Tyler.

Freshly subbed on, Josiah Dyer somehow saw his point blank effort saved midway through the half. A long ball into the box from our trialist found the young striker completely unmarked, but his header was straight at the visiting goalkeeper.

Soon after, Dyer expertly held up the ball before swivelling and firing a fine strike narrowly wide of the upright as our U21s searched for the elusive winner.

It was the visitors, however, who almost snatched victory and would have done but for a brilliant piece of goalkeeping late on from Hayton to keep the scores level.
