That just happened to be the case for lifelong Reds supporter, Neil, who received a cheque for £5,000 at the start of January!
“The timing was great because it was just after Christmas and with the cost of living and all that, so it was a very pleasant surprise,” he explained.
“When Beth rang, she said £1,000, but then informed me that it was a five-week rollover, so £5,000!”
Neil has been a member of the Centenary Society for three decades now and plans to put the money towards a skiing holiday.
It’s not the first time he has won, either. Back in 1994, player-manager Danny Wilson drew out his number for a £500 holiday voucher.
A season ticket holder in the East Stand, Neil feels more supporters should sign up to the Centenary because, as the saying goes, you’ve got to be in it to win it!
“I’ve paid £2 a week since 1990,” he discussed. “You certainly don’t miss it because it’s only a small amount at a given time. When you do actually get that call, it’s clearly a pleasant call to receive.”
Neil will be at Oakwell this weekend when the Reds entertain Cambridge United, and he is confident that Michael Duff’s side can come away with all three points.
“Hopefully we’ll get a win; we’re obviously playing very well at the moment,” said Neil. “You go down in anticipation of getting something out of the game, lately, and fingers cross for the victory.”
