REMEMBERING RIMMO

23 December 2023

Barnsley Football Club will once more be paying tribute to Norman Rimmington BEM when we host Stevenage this afternoon.

As promised on the day we lost the great man on 29th December 2016, this football club would forever remember Norman Rimmington. Every year since, we have honoured Norman with a Memorial fixture, played on a date close to that sad day.

So today we invite you all to remember the great man, who represented our Barnsley FC with such pride and distinction in a variety of roles since first arriving at Oakwell as a young goalkeeper back in 1945.

The legendary figure from Staincross would go on to coach the Reds, before working as physio, groundsman and eventually kitman, well beyond his 90th birthday.

Norman sadly passed away at the grand old age of 93, leaving behind a legacy the likes of which might never be seen again. It is perhaps fitting, then, that supporters voted for his name to be adorned across the ‘Ponty End’, which was renamed ahead of last season's Play-Off semi final against Bolton Wanderers.

The annual Norman Rimmington Memorial Match will see members of his family join us as guests in the Copier Systems Legends Suite this weekend, including grandson Richard who spoke to us this week (watch the video below), while the matchday programme, Oakwell Review, acts as another poignant tribute to one of the most iconic names in our proud history.
