Josiah Dyer sat down with iFollow Barnsley to reflect on his first international cap and goal with Montserrat earlier this month.
The 19-year-old travelled made the 4,000 mile trip to the Carribean in November to represent the island with a population of 5,000, playing two games in the CONCACAF Nations League.
A stark contrast from South Yorkshire in winter, Dyer embraced the new surroundings and challenge that awaited as he linked up with the side, coached by Lee Bowyer.
"It was really good," he smiled. "It's obviously different, because I'm playing in a totally different region so the weather, the pitches; it's very different. But it was an opportunity I relished from the minute I got there. It's different, but it's something that I enjoy. I enjoy different challenges, I've been on loan a couple of times and played with so many different types of players so that was another experience. I can't complain, I enjoyed every minute of it."
Montserrat overcame the Dominican Republic in the first game, winning 2-1, with Josiah being named on the bench.
Barbados were up next and a start came for our young forward, earning his first international cap. Brandon Barzey opened the scoring in the 33rd minute for Montserrat, the lead doubled shortly after by Dyer. The hosts went on to beat Barbados 4-2 to cap off a successful international break.
"That was the best feeling I've probably had for a long time in my football career," he admitted. "It was the best feeling to go out there and say I'm an international, it was definitely one of the highlights of my career. But to then go on and score and add on to it, it was an amazing feeling. As a young player, it makes you hungry for more opportunities and hungry for more goals as a striker as well."
