NEILL COLLINS ON BLACKPOOL DEFEAT

6 December 2023

Our Head Coach spoke to iFollow Barnsley after the Reds were defeated 2-1 by Blackpool in EFL Trophy action.

The Reds travelled to Bloomfield Road looking to progress to the round of 16 in the Bristol Street Motors Trophy.

John McAtee put the Reds ahead on the cusp of half-time with a cool finish, paying the price after picking up an injury during the goal and having to be substiuted at the break.

The Tangerines fought back in the game via Owen Dale in the 50th minute, added to by the deciding goal for Jake Beesley just after the hour mark.

Our Head Coach provided his thoughts after the full-time whistle:

"It was definitely a game of two halves. I think in the first half we were very good. Very dominant, won the ball high, created opportunities, restricted Blackpool to very little. Deservedly ahead at half-time, if anything it should have been more with the opportunities.

"But in the second half, after spurning a really good chance to go two nil ahead, we became far too stretched and Blackpool came into the game. We just got details wrong defensively which culminated in being behind. Then we had other opportunities to get back in the game and we didn't take them. After what was a very positive first half we end up standing here disappointed to be out of the cup."
