REDS DENIED BY CHARLTON

16 December 2023

Barnsley had to settle for a point at Oakwell this afternoon.

After going ahead in the first half through Adam Phillips' first goal of the season, the Reds were pegged back by the visitors after the break when the lively Corey Blackett-Taylor finally got the goal his performance had threatened.

It was the away side who had started the brighter at a sun-drenched Oakwell, with Blackett-Taylor causing plenty of issues down the right of the Reds defence. He would find the side netting in the first 10 minutes before being denied by the returning Liam Roberts soon after.

Phillips set his sights from distance as Barnsley looked to respond to the Addicks' promising start, but his skidding effort flew a yard or so wide. It was better from the Reds though and soon, Herbie Kane tried his luck from 25 yards but Charlton goalkeeper Ashley Maynard-Brewer got his fingertips to it brilliantly.

However, that pressure paid off on 24 minutes as Kane showed great persistence by the corner flag to keep the ball in before sliding a great pass towards the arriving Phillips who found the top corner with aplomb with his weaker left foot.

HALF TIME: Barnsley 1-0 Charlton Athletic

Former Reds loanee Slobodan Tedic was quiet for the Addicks but could have levelled for the visitors when he turned well on the edge of the box but his snapshot drifted wide of the post.

Sub John McAtee was then denied one-on-one by Maynard-Brewer and shortly after that chance he slid in and only just missed a superb low cross from Corey O'Keeffe at the far post.

Neill Collins' side were on top now and Kane blasted an effort wide from the edge of the box whilst Charlton were throwing bodies in the way to deny both Owen Dodgson and Luca Connell as the Reds looked to double their lead.

But on 70 minutes the away side hit back. Yayo Edun's ball towards Blackett-Taylor took a nick on its way through, falling perfectly for the forward who drove into the box and smashed home the Addicks' equaliser.

Barnsley continued to look the most likely to score again, as Connell saw a powerful left-footed strike graze the crossbar but what had been a fairly even contest would end in a draw.
