JORDAN WILLIAMS ON OPENING DAY WIN

6 August 2023

Jordan Williams spoke to iFollow Barnsley after our emphatic 7-0 victory against Port Vale on the opening day of the season.

In his 150th appearance for the Reds, Williams formed part of the defence which kept out the Valiants at Oakwell in the first game of the 23/24 campaign.

It was a pleasing day's work for the Reds, made all the better by the fact there were a lot of new factors in play, according to Williams.

"It can't get any better," began the 23-year-old. "Clean sheet, seven goals, Devante getting a hat-trick, people making their league debuts. It's a positive all-round.

"It's just three points at the end of the day. It doesn't matter if we've won seven nil or one nil, it's just the three points. We've just got to regroup and go again. Try and get the next three points."

Neill Collins' introduction has seen Williams be utilised as a part of a back three so far, instead of right wing-back where he spent most of last season.

The tweak in position favours how our new Head Coach wants the Reds to play this season, but the Huddersfield-born man paid testament to his teammates in implementing the style.

"That's what we strive for (clean sheets). The front lads want to score the goals, we want to keep the clean sheet. But at the end of the day I think it's a team effort. The way the front lads press helps us out massively. The way we play out of the back helps the front lads get the goals so I think it's a team effort all round really.

"I've played there before so I know the basics of it. It's a different type of style a little bit. The way the gaffer wants to play suits me playing there."
