REDS KNOCKED OUT OF CUP AFTER PENALTIES

8 August 2023

Barnsley exited this season's Carabao Cup after a penalty shootout.

In a rather uneventful first 45, it was the visitors who perhaps enjoyed the better moments, with a handful of half-chances, and but for poor shooting, ought to have gone into the interval in front.

The Reds weren't at their best, lacking the cohesion we saw at the weekend. The best moments coming courtesy of Barry Cotter who was dangerous down the right flank, albeit without the sort of delivery we saw on Saturday.

And on 23 minutes, the away side did forge ahead. A free-kick was headed back across goal and Luke Norris bundled the ball over the line.

Enjoying a first Reds start, Andy Dallas looked to try and drag us back into the tie when he worked room inside the six yard box before spinning to shoot, only to see Joe Murphy parry behind his powerful strike.

But Neill Collins' men did strike an equaliser, during first half stoppage time. That man on the right, Cotter found Kane and whilst it wasn't the cleanest strike he'll ever hit, the effort deceived Murphy in goal and we went into the break level.

HALF TIME: Barnsley 1-1 Tranmere Rovers

The visitors went back ahead early in the second half, when after first seeing an effort crash against the bar, a poor clearance dropped to Taylor who found the top corner with wonderful accuracy.

Murphy had to be alert low down to thwart Kane's drive as Barnsley looked to find a second equaliser, and soon afterwards, Jon Russell bent a shot towards the top corner only for Murphy to claw it away spectacularly.

A glut of changes from both sides disrupted the flow somewhat, and whilst Collins' side did enjoy most of the ball, chances were limited.

In fact, the opposition could have made it 3-1 but for some great goalkeeping from Ben Killip who denied Rovers from a few yards out.

With 97 minutes on the clock, the Reds were level as substitute Aiden Marsh struck, turning home Charlie Winfield's low cross from the left to force penalties.

But after spot kicks, it was the away side who won out, 7-6, and attention now turns to the weekend and a return to league action.

FULL TIME: Barnsley 2-2 Tranmere Rovers (Tranmere win on pens 7-6)

Killip, Cotter, Williams (Lofthouse), Lopata, Shepherd, Winfield, Kane (Yoganathan), Russell (Nejman), Chapman, Shaw (Marsh), Dallas (Jalo).

Unused: Roberts, James, Bland, Cadden.
