Barnsley Football Club is excited to announce the signing of French centre back, Maël de Gevigney from Nîmes Olympique for an undisclosed fee, subject to international clearance and successful visa application.

The 23-year-old defender arrives at Oakwell on a three-year contract, with a further year in the Club’s favour.

Hailing from the Versailles region of France, De Gevigney started his youth career in the lower leagues with Feucherolles USA, AS Meudon, Drancy.  Working his way through the ranks at Versailles, De Gevigney broke into the first team in 2019, going onto make 65 appearances and becoming captain of the team.

Our latest recruit signed his first professional deal with Nimes in June 2022, making 34 appearances last campaign in Ligue 2.

Khaled El-Ahmad, Barnsley FC Chief Executive Officer, said: “We are pleased to bring Maël to Oakwell.

“The change in transfer regulations around EU players meant we can explore different avenues when looking to strengthen the squad and allowed us to find Maël.

“We look forward to him beginning work straight away with the team to integrate into the squad and adjust to his new surroundings.”

In his opening interview with the Reds, the Frenchman spoke of his ambition in joining the Reds: “I’m really excited to join this club. It’s a big step for me, I’m really happy.

“It’s a country that I’ve watched a lot (England) since I was young. I like this kind of football, so when I got this opportunity to come to this country, I was really happy. It’s really good for me to be here.”

Welcome to Oakwell, Maël!
