NEILL COLLINS ON DEFEAT AGAINST U'S

20 August 2023

Our Head Coach gave his thoughts to iFollow Barnsley after our 3-1 defeat to Oxford United at Oakwell on Saturday afternoon.

An early penalty converted by Cameron Brannagan was added to in the second half by an own goal by Jordan Williams for the U's. Devante Cole did get the Reds back in it, but the visitors wrapped up the victory late on when Tyler Goodrham slid home from close range.

Collins felt his side created the chances to come away with all three points, but lacked quality to put the U's to the sword in the game.

"I think we were way below par," assessed the 39-year-old. "Despite that, I think we could of done enough to get something out of the game. In the first half, after a slow start, we took the ascendency and created the opportunities - we didn't capitalise.

"I expected us in the second half, going towards our fans, to really take the game on. I felt we'd seen signs of that. There is an issue in the second half of games. I thought we just lacked quality, gave Oxford their second goal. Certain players showed a lot of character and a lot of fight, we got back in it and we could have easily made it 2-2. But ultimately, we were short today."
