U21S BEATEN BY PETERBOROUGH

12 April 2023

Our U21s were beaten 2-1 by Peterborough United in the Professional Development League on Tuesday afternoon.

First half goals from Kai Corbett and Kabongo Tshimanga from the spot were enough to condemn the young Reds to defeat at the Weston Homes Stadium, despite Fabio Jalo’s strike prompting a late rally.

The hosts began the game sharply and with intent to attack, and they opened the scoring inside seven minutes following a quick break from Benjamin Arthur. His resulting pass found Corbett, who struck hard and low into the bottom corner.

After a lengthy stoppage in play as our trialist left the pitch on a stretcher, the Reds almost found an equaliser through Josiah Dyer, who burst through on goal but could only test Posh stopper William Blackmore.

Deep into first half injury time, Peterborough had their second of the encounter as Tshimanga duly converted from 12-yard after the referee adjudged Danny Benson to have fouled Ricky-Jade Jones in the box.

Our U21s searched for a way back into the contest before the break, and Keegan Hartley came close with a dinked effort from inside the area, but Blackmore was equal to his effort.

HALF-TIME: Peterborough United 2-0 Barnsley

The second half began in a scrappy manner as neither side could create many chances with their possession. Good defending from Charlie Hickingbottom ensured that the hosts couldn’t break in behind as they looked to play balls over the top.

Our U21s thought they had clawed their way back into the game following intricate build-up play between Jalo and Jack Butterfill, with the ball eventually being played for Dyer to slam home only for the assistant to raise his flag.

The young Reds’ endeavours would eventually be rewarded 10 minutes from time as Dyer spun his man before finding Jalo, who took a touch before calmly dispatching into the bottom right corner.

Peterborough held onto their slender advantage thanks to some inspired goalkeeping from Blackmore as he kept out Butterfill’s fine free-kick and thwarted Hartley late on as Tom Harban’s side returned to South Yorkshire empty handed.
