THEO CHAPMAN DELIGHTED WITH U18S VICTORY

23 April 2023

Following our U18s’ hard-fought 3-2 win over Charlton Athletic, Theo Chapman expressed his delight as he marked his first start after returning from injury with a goal.

The young Reds had to come from behind following Ryan Huke’s opener but showed great determination to score three and claim an impressive victory.

“I’m over the moon,” he beamed. “I’ve had a tough few weeks out, so I’m delighted to be back out on the pitch and scoring goals again.”

After conceding late on in the first half, Chapman provided an instant response by netting the leveller, ensuring his side didn’t go into the interval a goal behind.

It turned out to be a key moment in the encounter as our U18s went onto dominate the second period and send a statement of intent to the rest of the league heading into the play-offs.

“I think my goal actually gave us the motivation we needed to go on and win the game,” he revealed. “At half-time, we were speaking about how we were disappointed that we weren’t dominating.

18S REPORT CHARLTON

“In the second half, we came out and looked a much better team. Obviously, we’d like to have dominated the whole game, but we proved our worth in the second half and got the two goals.”

Having won three consecutive matches with a far superior goal margin prior to this encounter, our young Reds demonstrated a different side to their game and showed they are capable of coming out on top in evenly fought contests.

Chapman believes this is an important ability to have and one that will stand them in good stead for the end-of-season play-offs.

“It’s very important,” he admitted. “Charlton are a very tough team and we had to adapt our game plan in order to beat them. It was a real battle and a great test for us.

“Going into the play-offs, we’ll continue to work hard and outrun the opposition. If we’re good on the ball and ruthless in attack, we shouldn’t have any issues scoring goals. We’re hoping to do well in them.”
