JAMIE SEARLE ON MAKING HIS REDS DEBUT

18 September 2022

The New Zealand international was introduced midway through the second half on Saturday after Brad Collins was involved in a nasty aerial clash.

A back problem for Jack Walton - who has featured on the bench for every league game so far this campaign - meant Searle was the man to make the bench in Cambridgeshire on Saturday.

A bitter-sweet moment for Jamie, making his Football League debut, but at the expense of his teammate with whom he works so closely.

"First thing's first, everyone hopes Brad is alright," opened Searle. "It wasn't the nicest of collisions, I hope he's alright. It's not the way I wanted to make my debut, but it's happened and you've just got to get on with it.

"It's hard when you're sitting on the bench. You do switch off a little bit, but you're still engaged in the game, watching what is happening, how they're playing.

"As soon as something like that happens you don't really get time to think, which is the main thing. You're just thrown in at the deep end which is what I prefer. I don't think. When I don't think, I seem to do better."

The situation Jamie was introduced to at The Abbey was not an easy one. The team had just lost their goalkeeper, were down to ten men and faced 30 mins of trying to hold onto a one-nil lead.

However, Searle just stuck to his principles and carried out what he practices in training; day in, day out.

"Essentially I've got to go out there and do what I do every day," he discussed. "We work every single day to have these opportunities and when they come around you've got to take them.

"Obviously, there's still lots of things to work on. But, look, I'm happy with the three points and a clean sheet, definitely."

Searle joined the Club in the June of this year, linking up with Collins and Walton in the goalkeeping department at Oakwell.

The 6ft 6' stopper has settled well into life in South Yorkshire and is enjoying his time working with our Director of Goalkeeping, Tom Fawdry and the lads.

"I'm enjoying it," smiled Searle. "The players are all good, they're all a similar age so we all get on well. We're all hard-working, we all want to win and essentially do what's best for us and the Club.

"They're top keepers. I'm learning just from watching them every single day. Seeing what they do, I'm trying to implement in my game because essentially, I'm the young one in the group!

"We're tight, we're close, which makes it easier to learn.
