JAMES NORWOOD ON REDS VICTORY OVER ADDICKS

25 September 2022

The striker saw his name on the scoresheet in our 3-1 victory against Charlton Athletic in Sky Bet League One action on Saturday at Oakwell.

Josh Benson opened the scoring with a ferocious 30-yard strike after 10 minutes, with Norwood doubling our lead ten minutes after the restart. Devante Cole added a third in the 76th minute before the visitors netted a late consolation through Jack Payne.

"It wasn't a complete performance," began the 32-year-old. "We know that within ourselves, we're capable of much more. But all in all, you're going into games to win them. We're gonna play badly, we're gonna play well, we're going to be somewhere in between. The most important thing for us is walking away with three points.

"I've got to say, the lads that came on just fitted in really well and, we passed the baton to them, they go on and see the game out. There's a lot of quality within the squad and it shows. The players we can bring on, the roles that they play.

"We're in this together."

The aforementioned lack of complete performance in the opinion of our number nine came in a game the Reds nevertheless won by three goals to one.

Norwood believes there was little between the two sides in the opening 45, but praised Josh Benson for his fantastic strike and emphasised the importance of having individual quality within the squad that can produce moments like that.

"The game was neither here nor there in the first half," he explained. "But Josh sticks one in the 'stanch' from 30 yards. We've got players with quality who can hurt teams, who have that little bit of magic.

"The second goal is a counter-press, something that we obviously work on in training. The third goal is Jordan Williams doing what Jordan Williams does. Running in behind, wins a couple of tackles and then picks a simple pass for 'D' [Devante Cole] to slot in. There's three different types of goals."

On a personal note, it's now three goals in a Red shirt for our number nine since joining from Ipswich Town in the summer. The striker feels he is now much sharper and is the bearing the fruits of his hard work.

"It's been the last couple of weeks where I've really felt fit," he revealed. "It took me a little bit of time to get used to it. 'Aitchy' [Jack Aitchison] was in, playing really well. I've had to bide my time with 25/30 minutes here and there.

"For me, it was just about getting minutes on the pitch. It's been the last couple of weeks I've really felt like I'm getting where I need to be. Still not quite there, but if I keep sticking them in the net, hopefully, I'll find it soon."

In the 54th minute, Norwood doubled our lead after great work from Devante Cole on the right allowed him to drill a ball into the six-yard box.

This is where the Eastbourne-born player comes alive, reacting to the cross by audaciously flicking an effort towards goal and beating Craig MacGillivray in the Addicks net.

"That's the area I like to get in," he confirmed. "Six yards out and I've got to adapt to finish. I score a lot of my goals in the six-yard box with balls like that. For me, it was nothing new being in there, I just had to find a way to get a foot on the ball. From that close, more often that not, if it's on target it goes in."

"This is done now though, chalked off. We go in on Monday, we work hard and that's it. We treat every game the same. We don't think about what we've done in the past, we don't look back. We keep looking forwards."
