FIRST WORDS | ADAM PHILLIPS

2 September 2022

Joining the Reds on a three-year deal, the midfielder sat down to talk to us after his deadline day arrival from Burnley.

The 23-year-old has committed his future with the Reds until 2025, and can’t wait to get going at Oakwell.

“I’m absolutely delighted to sign here,” beamed Phillips.

“Looking forward to meeting everyone, I’ve already met the staff, they all seem really welcoming and nice. I’m looking forward to meeting the squad tomorrow and looking forward to getting going on Saturday.”

Phillips has spent the last two years on loan with both Accrington Stanley and Morecambe, gaining vital EFL experience.

During his time with the Shrimps, he recorded 21 goals in 86 appearances from the midfield. Getting forward is the aspect of the game our new recruit enjoys.

“I’ll always give 100% on the pitch,” he asserted.

“I look forward to hopefully scoring some goals and getting plenty of assists. I like to play in the number 10 or number 8 role. If the manager asks me to play anywhere else I’ll always give my all.

“I like getting forward, I like playing forward and being positive with my passes. So yeah, that’s what they [the fans] should expect from me!”

Phillips’ move to Barnsley is his first venture outside of the North-West in his footballing career, starting out at Blackburn Rovers and Liverpool.

A move to Turf Moor in 2019 followed, with our latest midfield recruit crossing paths with a couple of our own midfielders early on in his career.

“I know two of the lads here. Josh Benson, he was obviously at Burnley. I played with Herbie Kane. He was at Liverpool as well. He [Herbie] came a bit later but we both played together.

“I’ll be looking forward to seeing them again!”

As mentioned, Phillips has played consistently in League One for a year now with Morecambe, experiencing firsthand the division Michael Duff’s men are currently navigating.

The Preston-born player emphasised how tough the division is, having to fight in every game to have a successful outcome.

"Every game is tough,” he discussed.

“There’s no easy games in this league. It’s even tougher because you have to play Saturday-Tuesday some weeks. You have to go into every game trying to get three points.

“You’ve got to look after yourself because the game’s come thick and fast. I’m looking forward to getting back playing and hopefully, it will be a good season.”
