U21S BEATEN BY COVENTRY

1 October 2022

Our U21s suffered a disappointing 2-0 defeat to Coventry City away at the Alan Higgs Centre on Friday afternoon.

Despite Barnsley’s valiant efforts, confident strikes from Tom Costello and Will Bapaga were enough to dismantle the young Reds in blustery conditions.

Jack Butterfill came the closet to scoring during the opening exchanges, with our number nine seeing his long range effort saved by Tom Billson.

City’s Callum Perry was the next to have a shot on goal as he connected with a corner before heading well wide of the mark. The Reds were denied in similar fashion just moments later, with Danny Benson’s header also flashing past the upright.

Our hosts obtained the opener before the halfway mark when a cut back set Costello up to fire the ball in from close range. It was a goal that their attacking efforts warranted as they in at the break with a slender advantage.

HALF-TIME: Coventry City 1-0 Barnsley

Shortly after the interval, our hosts doubled their lead when Bapaga sent a looping shot over Paul Cooper from range.

Barnsley responded well to their second setback and almost produced an instant response as Fabio Jalo dribbled his way into the box and laid the ball to Hayden Pickard, who was unlucky to have his effort blocked.

The final portion of the game - overshadowed by the treacherous weather conditions – saw the young Reds produce a spirited performance. Ultimately, it just wasn’t their day as they sunk to a 2-0 defeat.

REDS XI: Cooper (GK), Trialist, Pickard, Lancaster (C), Benson, Ariely, Chapman, Nejman, Butterfill, Hartley, Jalo.
