JOSH MARTIN ON WIN OVER DONCASTER ROVERS

12 October 2022

The attacking-midfielder spoke to iFollow Barnsley after a productive evening's work for the 21-year-old.

Scoring twice and assisting two, it's fair to say Josh Martin enjoyed his return to his old stomping ground in the Reds' 4-2 victory over Doncaster Rovers.

The win also means the Reds are now through to the knockout stages of the Papa John's Trophy, topping off a great evening for Martin and his teammates.

"It was a great first-half performance from everyone in the team," he began. "I think the second half was tougher, players coming off, players coming on.

"Doncaster also brought a couple of stronger players in so it made it a much more difficult game. However, I thought we dug in well. For the young lads, they did really well to hold it out and they'll learn a lot from tonight. So, I thought it was a good team performance tonight after Saturday."

At 21, Josh is no seasoned professional himself, but has featured over 50 times across the top four divisions in England.

With such a young squad starting on Tuesday night, Martin felt like he could offer advice to his more junior colleagues and be a source of advice.

"I tried to give them some of the experiences I've had over the years. I try to help them as much as I can, give them confidence.

"I think that's so important in football - confidence. You can see that when they do play with confidence that they're a talented young bunch. Just keep on pushing them, and they'll learn for themselves too."

Academy prospect Fabio Jalo played in the attack alongside Martin at the Eco-Power Stadium, scoring two goals himself and opening his account in a Barnsley shirt.

The Norwich loanee was full of praise for his teammate after the 16-year-old's showing on Tuesday night.

"I think he's done really well tonight," he commended. "I think he finished the goals really well and he can be really proud of himself.

"I think he worked hard. He can sleep well tonight!"

Martin returned to the club where he spent the back end of last season on loan, featuring twenty times for the fellow-South Yorkshire side.

Scoring four goals and assisting three times, he enjoyed his time at the Eco-Power Stadium and his return on Tuesday night with the Reds.

"Yeah, it's nice to be back," he smiled.

"It was a good loan for me last season. Obviously, a good luck stadium for me! Tonight was really good as well. It's always nice to be back and see everyone as well.

"The plan is to get back in training on Thursday, get back to work and prepare for the game on Saturday."
