MICHAEL DUFF PREVIEWS VISIT OF EXETER CITY

6 October 2022

Our Head Coach discussed the latest injury news, his thoughts on the season so far and his assessment of Saturday's opponents in Exeter City.

ON INJURIES

"It's just the long-termers. Wolfie [Matty Wolfe], Jordan Helliwell and Conor McCarthy. Other than that, it's a clean bill of health.

"They're closer, but nowhere near playing yet. They're progressing nicely. Jordan has to follow a protocol set by the surgeon, he feels great. Wolfie is the same, but he's got another two weeks until he can do any sort of movement on the 'AlterG' (anti-gravity treadmill). They're a long way from being fit but progressing nicely."

ON TEAM SELECTION

"It's never that simple that you win a game and pick the same team. "We'll pick a team that we think is going to be the most effective to win the game. Exeter will pose different challenges to Fleetwood - a different formation, we think.

"Sometimes the players probably might think we roll out the same eleven, but it's never that easy."

ON THE FORM OF THE STRIKERS

"We've said from the very off that there are shirts available. We were looking to strengthen the area, but I also said that my focus is to work on the players that are here.

"People got obsessed with 'the grass is always greener' and that every window you're going to sign better players - it isn't always the case. Otherwise every club would always improve, and they don't.

"Some players have been given opportunities that they might not have gotten before, but they've taken them and they deserve the credit."

ON EXETER

"They've been a back three. 3-5-2, 3-4-3, call it what you want. Jevani Brown playing in a number ten role. They're not afraid to go in behind. They put you under pressure, they put balls in the box and they keep it in the top third really well.

"Where they are in the league is success, for them. I don't think I'm been disrespectful. I've been a team that's just been promoted. They've had a good start to the season, probably one of the reasons the manager has been poached, because of their positive style. They'll be looking to carry that momentum on."

ON TEAM PROGRESSION

"I don't overthink it, we'll analyse at the end of the season when we see where we finish. Just keep working hard, every day. it's boring but it's the way I've always worked, as a player and as a manager. Just try and do your best every day.

"I wasn't here last year, I've said it before. A lot of the negativity, I wasn't affected by it because I wasn't here. The mixed emotions around the place, people are talking a little bit more positively which is great. It means the players are doing something right.

"Winning games always helps, but I think even before we were consistently winning there were definitely signs of progress. I've said it all along - the players have been receptive to new information. Been asked to do new things, they've bought into it and are reaping the rewards."
