REDS BEAT FLEETWOOD IN ADDED TIME

1 October 2022

A late Jack Aitchison header saw Barnsley to a third straight away win on the coast!

A 91st minute Jack Aitchison headed goal helped Michael Duff's improving Reds outfit to a third straight league win here in Fleetwood.

It was the Reds who started this one the brighter of the two sides, with all the play featuring in the home side’s third in the opening exchanges.

Luke Thomas found himself through on the right after an incisive pass from Jordan Williams presented the 23-year-old with the opportunity to either cross or shoot, opting for the former, resulting in a Fleetwood defender putting the ball behind for a corner. The resulting set piece was too heavy for anyone in the area and rolled out of play.

The roles reversed in the next threatening attack for Michael Duff’s men. Thomas turned provider as he slotted in Williams on the right, in an almost identical position, with the wing-back flashing a venomous ball across the front of the Fleetwood goal. The wickedness of the ball proved to be just too quick for the onrushing James Norwood and Devante Cole as they flung their bodies towards the ball in the six-yard-box.

Clear-cut chances were few and far between in the changeable Lancashire coast climate, with both sides’ final ball denying them of a genuine chance on goal. Robbie Cundy kept the scores level going into the break after he was in the right place at the right time to clear Shaun Rooney’s effort off the line.

HALF-TIME: Fleetwood Town 0-0 Reds

The start of the second half saw the pattern of play continue as the first, with neither outfit being able to threaten the opposing ‘keepers.

In an act of pathetic fallacy, the grey clouds rolled over Highbury where a game with little action was being played. Both sides struggled to find a pattern in the match and neither ‘keeper was worked.

The game began to gather some pace with ten minutes to play, with both gaffer’s using the substitutes at their disposal and looking to go for the elusive opener.

The opener was found just as we entered added time. One of those subs, Jack Aitchison leapt brilliantly to send a downward header into the opposite corner having been wonderfullt picked out by James Norwood.

Cue bedlam in the sold out away stand, and another impressive victory for Duff's men.
