Our U18s produced a dominant display and cruised into the next round of the FA Youth Cup with a 5-0 win against Spennymoor Town.

Taking place in front of a reasonable Oakwell crowd on Friday evening, fans were treated to a delightful first half performance in which all five goals were scored inside the opening half an hour.

The young Reds showcased their attacking prowess from the off, breaking the deadlock within the first minute. Midfielder Theo Chapman danced his way into the box before curling a strike past Harry Alderson to give his side an early lead.

Captain Josiah Dyer then doubled Barnsley’s advantage 10 minutes later, powering home a header after connecting brilliantly with Josh McKay’s exceptional cross.

Within the blink of an eye, Mckay added his name to the scoresheet when he unleashed a thunderous effort which took a fortunate deflection and found the far corner. It was some arguably poor defending from the visitors but an appreciable strike nonetheless.

Moments later, Alex Anaman latched onto McKay’s weighted through ball and hurdled past Ben Burgin before adjusting his feet and curling the ball past Alderson and into the bottom corner with Alex Carr unable to block it.

Our young side’s fifth and final goal came in the 26th minute, when Dyer grabbed his second of the game after showing great strength and unleashing a blistering close range strike into the roof of the net at Alderson’s near post.

HALF-TIME: Barnsley 5-0 Spennymoor Town
Throughout the majority of the second half, the young Reds controlled possession and passed the ball around with ease.
Our visitors began to come out of their shells but were still unable to find a route back into the contest. The nearest they came was in the form of a close range strike which ricocheted off the crossbar and back into play before being cleared.
Despite our young side having countless second half efforts on goal, none of them came close to finding the back of the net. The outcome of the tie was sealed early on and despite Spennymoor’s valiant efforts, Barnsley eased to victory.
Our U18s will face Scunthorpe United at Oakwell in the second round, with a date and time to be confirmed.
