JEAN CLAUDE MAKIESSI LOOKS AHEAD TO FA YOUTH CUP CLASH

9 November 2022

The battling central midfielder spoke to iFollow Barnsley ahead of our U18s' FA Youth Cup second round tie against Scunthorpe United at Oakwell on Thursday evening.

Kicking off at 7pm, Nicky Eaden's side will be looking to progress to the third round of the prestigious youth competition under the lights.

A convincing first round 5-0 victory over Spennymoor Town ensured smooth progression, setting up an encounter with the Iron in the next stage of the competition.

"The performance was great," he began, smiling. "Especially in the first half. We came out with a game plan, and that was to get an early lead; I think we did that well.

"Second half - we kept the ball a bit more. We just made sure we saw out the game and no upset was going to happen, so it was good."

The Iron possess a Category 3 academy, lower than the Reds' Category 2 rated academy. This makes our youngsters favourites for this tie, but the 18-year-old believes the team have to approach this game in a similar vein to the match-up against Spennymoor Town.

"Scunthorpe, we played them in 16s - they were decent", discussed Makiessi. "They gave us a good run. I feel in a game like that, it's pretty similar to Spennymoor. We've got to battle it out."

"With the squad that we have, we can go on to do better things."
