CHARLIE HICKINGBOTTOM ON SCUNTHOPE CHALLENGE

9 November 2022

Our young Reds take on the Iron in the FA Youth Cup second round at Oakwell on Thursday evening, kicking off at 7pm.

The first round saw Nicky Eaden's men convincingly defeat Spennymoor Town 5-0 at Oakwell last Friday in the first round.

Hickingbottom, utilised both as a central defender and midfielder, believes the mentality the team approached the tie with allowed them to come away with a positive result.

"We didn't get complacent - that's the reason it was 5-0 in the first half, really," he discussed. "The players were just up for it. We outplayed them and outran them.

"We got the job done first half. Hopefully, it's the same again on Thursday night."

Scunthorpe United await then on Thursday evening, with our young Reds been painted as favourites going into this one.

However, Hickingbottom stressed the physical challenge that he and his teammates will face against the Iron on Thursday night.

"We're confident," said the 17-year-old. "Hopefully, we get the job done. We've worked a lot in training on ways to break them down.

"It's going to be a tough game. Physically, a strong opposition. We've just got to thrive on the night really, under the lights."
