MARTIN DEVANEY ON EMIRATES FA CUP VICTORY

27 November 2022

The first team coach reflected on a job well done as the Reds advanced into the third round of the competition in seeing off Crewe Alexandra at Oakwell yesterday.

In a dominant performance against their League Two opponents, goals from Devante Cole (sixth of the season), Adam Phillips (fourth) and Josh Benson (fifth) saw Barnsley ease themselves into the third round at Oakwell on Saturday.

Rarely troubled on the day, the Reds put in a professional display and Martin Devaney was quick to praise the players for their attitude.

"It was very professional." Martin began.

"These games can be difficult, and Crewe are a good side who are in good form and can play some good stuff. But the lads were really on their game, they approached it with the right mindset and after getting that first goal, they controlled the tie well from that point."

With the goals continuing to be shared around the squad, Devaney spoke of his pleasure knowing that everyone is chipping in but pointed out that it all begins with the hard work that goes into each and every game.

He said: "I think Devante for example shows that if you work hard at your game, that even if the goals aren't coming you are still seeing a really good performance.

"It was a scrappy one for him today. But we always say, the harder you work the luckier you get.

"In midfield there's lots of competition, and the gaffer talks about those who have the shirt having to work hard to keep it. Adam Phillips has shown in the last four or five games what he brings to the team and long may that continue.

"And then with Josh Benson, it says everything about the mentality of the player. He wants to play, he's put into a new position and I thought he got on with it really well and has probably given us some food for thought with that performance."
